Many of our clients were not familiar with Twitter or the variety of benefits inherent in participating in this rapidly growing network, so we put together a few tips to bring everyone up to speed. Considering that  the number of Twitter users increases by about 300,000 users per day, it’s crucial to utilize this network as an integral part of an effective online marketing strategy. It is an absolute must for business owners and companies of all sizes to interact through Twitter.

What you should know…

1. The first step is to create an account on Twitter and set up your profile. A custom background is a great way to stand out and to make your page unique to your brand. Although Twitter has a character limit, be sure that your blog description is as informative as possible.

2. Start following! You can use the Twitter search box to find people tweeting about topics relevant to your business or industry. Your goal is to not only find potential customers this way, but to also develop relationships with other industry professionals. Therefore, start following people with a common interest.

3. Don’t forget to follow back! If someone follows you, it is customary to follow them back. This is how you will gain a larger following and help spread the word about your company.

4. Start Tweeting! Tweets must be 140 characters or less so make sure that your content is interesting and eye catching, while not exceeding the character limit. When it comes to the subject matter keep it relevant and useful.

5. When promoting a blog post or specific content, ask a question or give a brief preview rather than just posting a link. This will give viewers more of an incentive to read your blog and learn more about what you are offering.

6. If someone mentions you or shares something you find interesting Re-Tweet it! Re-tweeting is simply re-posting what someone else has said and mentioning them at the same time. This is a great way to get involved in a two-way communication stream within your network. The more you share other user’s content the more likely it is that they will share yours so Re-Tweet often!

7. Be active but don’t go overboard! There isn’t necessarily a magic number of how many times you should tweet per day, but your activity should be consistent and your content should be of good quality. As long as what you are saying is relevant and useful, your followers will pay attention. Excessive tweeting can be considered spam and users will most likely unfollow you.

8. Use the Twitter Search box to see if someone is talking about your business or industry. Try to participate and respond to relevant posts.

10. Keep it up! Many Twitter users will set up accounts but their participation eventually dies down. Be sure to keep your tweets and interaction with your followers consistent in order to continue expanding your network and using Twitter to get more exposure.
